19 of the most stylish celebrity couples of all time
COUPLES DRESSING HAS long had a bad rap. We either cringe at the thought of matching tracksuits or jumpers, or cast our minds back to Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s quadruple denim days. Coordinated clothing at its core is cheesy, tacky and honestly, a little twisted, I mean … who actually wants to twin with their partner?
There is a way of sartorially complementing your partner, while retaining your individualism. And there’s no better source of inspiration than “it couples” whose very existence permeates our subconscious and floods our feeds. We often anticipate (and long for) said celeb couples’ red carpet appearances — two is better than one, after all.
We’ve rounded up our favourite twosomes throughout the decades, who stylishly wore their hearts on their sleeves.
Best dressed celebrity couples of all time
John and Jackie Kennedy
Perhaps the most stylish U.S. president and First Lady prior to the Obamas. Jackie Kennedy was a defining style figure during the ’60s and ’70s. She often sported tweed CHANEL suits, pillbox hats by HALSTON and had a penchant for tailored coats and strapless gowns. Her husband, while still looking equally dapper, often took a step back sartorially to let her shine. John F Kennedy often complemented Jackie’s classic ensembles with sharp and well-tailored black suits.
Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg
They were considered the power couple of the ’60s, who infamously had a volatile relationship. Fortunately, the British actress and French musician were harmonious in one asset — their style. Radiating that natural je ne sais quoi; Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg never played by the fashion rules, which made them ever-so-more appealing. While attending the gala de l’union des artistes in Paris, Birkin opted to wear her crocheted dress (picture opposite) back to front. Daring and dazzling.
Mick and Bianca Jagger
He was the frontman of rock n roll’s edgiest band and she was the queen of the Studio 54 scene. Can you name a cooler couple? Mick and Bianca Jagger provided all the sartorial lust throughout their seven-year marriage in the ‘70s but none more obvious than their glamorous St. Tropez wedding. Not conforming to traditional bridal and grooms standards, the Nicaraguan socialite chose a Yves Saint Laurent skirt suit and veiled hat, while Mick accompanied her with a muted suit with floral shirt. Power suiting to perfection.
Sonny and Cher
While Sonny and Cher’s relationship didn’t last, they were always faithful to their fashion. Their colourful and bright ’70s get-ups often mirrored their big personalities. None more obvious than at the 45th Academy Awards. Cher donned a sparkling gold two-piece set and hoop earrings, while Sonny coordinated with a dark navy patterned suit — allowing Cher to truly shine.
Jack Nicholson and Anjelica Huston
Anjelica Huston was an up-and-coming model, while Nicholson was filming Chinatown — which he eventually earned an Oscar for. The relatively-unknown Huston arrived as his date to the 47th Academy Awards (three years into their relationship) and wore a chic mermaid sequinned gown and mother-of-pearl minaudière. Meanwhile, Nicholson sported his signature dark sunglasses and a black hat.
Robert Downey Jr. and Sarah Jessica Parker
You probably forgot these two dated. Before there was Big, Carrie (or Sarah Jessica Parker) had another ‘bad boy’, Robert Downey Jr. The pair were together for eight years and often made an entrance with dishevelled ’90s hair and oversized ensembles. An effortless look that has unsurprisingly come back in fashion decades later.
Johnny Depp and Kate Moss
The Hollywood actor and British supermodel epitomised ’90s style perfection. Perhaps we owe them for our perennial love of the decade? From 1994 to 1998, Johnny Depp and Kate Moss shared a stormy yet passionate relationship, which thankfully never translated on the red carpet. Always looking positively polished — yet effortless — the pair rocked everything from classic leathers and denims to more elegant attire like the one picture here at the Beverly Hills premiere of Don Juan DeMarco. While their relationship was relatively short-lived, their couples coordination is gratifyingly immortalised.
Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow
While we’re still rooting for Brad and Jen’s romantic reunion, we certainly appreciate the cool and minimalist coordination the Hollywood heavyweight achieved with his first famous girlfriend. Brad Pitt briefly dated Gwyneth Paltrow in the mid ’90s and the pair seemingly dazzled us with their nonchalant attitude to fashion. Everything was pared-back but in the best way, including their coordinating tousled locks.
George and Amal Clooney
Well, doesn’t this ensemble look eerily familiar? Amal and George Clooney took fashion cues from Bianca and Mick Jagger when they formalised their nuptials in Venice. Amal stepped out in a sophisticated cream two-piece with George complementing her with a grey suit. Adding to their summer Italian flair, the pair accessorised with a wide brim hat and classic pair of shades. Ever since, this moment now forever encapsulated in our minds — we’ve eagerly anticipated more sartorial lust from Clooneys.
David and Victoria Beckham
We simply couldn’t have a list without Britain’s unofficial king and queen. While they’ve certainly sartorially come a long way since their courting days (their hairstyles have also drastically improved); better late than never right? Makes sense, they’ve continued to hit best-dressed lists given Victoria’s namesake label continues to reign supreme. Our favourite coordinated moment, however, remains their 2014 Met Gala look as the pair not only pulled of white on white (kudos) but they fantastically couples coordinated.
Jason Statham and Roșie Huntington-Whiteley
Unsurprisingly, Britain’s action hero wooed the Victoria’s Secret supermodel – but the London-based couple have now been together for well over a decade. While it’s not often we get to see the fiercely private couple together (Rosie rarely uploads photos of her family to Instagram), when we do — it’s an absolute fashionable feast for the eyes. Our favourite, however, has to be their 2016 Golden Globes appearance with Statham smartly dressed in a velvet tux while the Rose Inc. founder shimmers in Versace.
Olivia Palermo and Johannes Huebl
Now that’s a fashion couple, if we ever did see one. Olivia Palermo has been calling the stylish couple shots ever since her intimate wedding to Johannes Huebl in New York. The American socialite and influencer opted for a non-traditional, three-piece Carolina Herrera ensemble, which delightfully corresponded with Johannes Huebl’s all white suit …. and it’s only gone up from there. Never one to disappoint on the couples clothing front.
Jonah Hill and Sarah Brady
’70s-styled Gucci pastel power suit. Hollywood’s favourite funny man turned scruffy chic Gucci God doubled up in the most literal sense with his new girlfriend Sarah Brady at the premiere of Don’t Look Up. The couple matched from head-to-toe in a pastel blue Gucci suit (sans shirt, which appears to be Gucci’s trademark now), which they paired with printed satin loafers. Their accessories and hair was even similarly styled with corresponding pinned brooches to their lapels and tousled California waves. Brady is a surfer after all. We’re certainly excited to see this new couple’s sartorial journey.
Bella Hadid and Marc Kalman
Bella Hadid is the younger generation’s ultimate style icon, so it is only natural that her art director partner, Marc Kalman is just as stylish. The pair frequently step out together in laid-back (but ever-so-perfect) outfits, such as these looks worn while out on a walk. Hadid added a pop of colour to her monochrome ‘fit with a yellow knit thrown over her shoulders and Kalman kept it casual with a muted vest.
Robert Pattinson and Suki Waterhouse
After keeping their relationship under wraps for four years, Suki Waterhouse and Robert Pattinson made sure their public debut as a couple was a stylish one. In December, the pair wore Dior looks to attend the Maison’s autumn 2023 menswear show in Giza, Egypt. Pattinson looked dapper in a beige suit and turtleneck combo, which complemented the actress’ flowing mauve gown.
Elle Macpherson and Doyle Bramhall II
Elle Macpherson and Doyle Bramhall II were ever-so stylish while attending Dior’s autumn/winter 2023 show in Paris. Wrapped in matching black, white and caramel layers to brave the chill, the pair accessorised to perfection with large black sunglasses, boots and, in Machpherson’s case, a chunky belt.
Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas
It’s no secret that Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas make for one stylish power couple, but this year, they’ve upped their collective sartorial game. From their pink-and-black co-ords at the recent Valentino show, to these resplendent looks worn at the opening of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai — where Jonas took a muted backseat and let his wife’s glittering sheer gown shine — they’re certainly in the running for 2023’s chicest pair.
Keanu Reeves and Alexandra Grant
Ever since the internet’s boyfriend Keanu Reeves made his first public appearance with visual artist Alexandra Grant in 2019, the world has been enamoured with the creative pair. They reportedly first met around 2011 after publishing their debut art book Ode to Happiness and later co-founded the publishing house X Artists’ Books. But on April 16, 2023, the usually private pair stylishly walked the red carpet for the 2023 Museum of Contemporary Art Gala at the Geffen Contemporary in Los Angeles. Grant, 49, wore a bright red dress featuring a vibrant floral print and high halter neckline; meanwhile Reeves, 58, looked dapper in a relaxed black suit with a white shirt, striped tie and a pair of brown leather shoes. The couple was reportedly affectionate throughout the event, holding hands on the red carpet and even stopping to take a kiss in front of photographers.
Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost
The A-list couple brought a little old Hollywood glamour to the Cannes red carpet on May 23. Making a rare red carpet appearance together, Scarlett Johansson chicly attended the premiere of her new movie Asteroid City at the iconic Palais des Festivals with husband Colin Jost. Johansson donned a candy pink Prada column gown with peek-a-boo attached sparkly bra — which also showed off her large floral back tattoo. Meanwhile, Jost looked dapper in a classic black tuxedo. While the pair haven’t walked the red carpet together since the Kennedy Center Honors more than a year ago, they certainly weren’t shy with packing on the PDA at Cannes. Johansson and Jost secretly wed in 2020, before welcoming their son Cosmo, now 2 to the world.
