June Streaming: Binge And Just Like That… season 2 and The Weeknd’s The Idol

From Carrie and Aidan’s reunion in ‘And Just Like That…’ season 2 to the dark dramas of ‘Black Mirror: Season 6’ and ‘The Idol.’
By Hayley Peppin

And Just Like That… season 2. | BINGE

CAN YOU believe it’s almost June? We’ve now reached the chilly, puffer-jacket time of year — which sees some flock to Europe for sun-drenched Aperols or embrace goblin mode at home. But whether you’re travelling abroad or desperately trying to find a new binge post Succession blues, you can still go an adventure with a stack of new releases.

Ditch the weekend social plans for some quality cozy time with Abel Tesfaye’s (The Weeknd) The Idol, which just recently made its world premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, as well as the much-anticipated And Just Like That… season two — which sees Carrie and Aidan reunite! —  and the wickedly funny whodunnit series Deadloch by Melbourne comediennes Kate McLennan and Kate McCartney. See all BAZAAR’s recommendations below.

Black Mirror: Season 6, Limited Series — June TBC

Black Mirror is back. It’s been a hot minute since the series to haunt your dreams, or least give you all the late night thoughts, has aired on Netflix. But the psych-drama returns some time this June following a four-year hiatus. Naturally, Black Mirror is keeping us guessing on its release with no word yet on its premiere. Nonetheless, Netflix slates this twisted venture as its “most unpredictable season yet” with the typical element of the unexpected permeating through its dark, satirical anthology.

While plot details are sparing, creator Charlie Brooker has revealed the titles for the five-brand new episodes of the Emmy-winning series with ‘Joan is Awful,’ ‘Loch Henry,’ ‘Beyond the Sea,’ ‘Mazey Day’ and ‘Demon 79.’ Unsurprisingly, they all sound wickedly grim — and you bet we’re all be binging them — but we’re most captivated by ‘Joan Is Awful.’ In a nutshell, Netflix describes the episode as: “An average woman is stunned to discover a global streaming platform has launched a prestige TV drama adaptation of her life — in which she is portrayed by Hollywood A-lister Salma Hayek Pinault. Other A-Listers starring in the series includes Aaron Paul and Zazie Beetz.

Stan

Year Of, New Series —  June 9

If you’re missing your Heartbreak High fix, Stan’s new teen series Year Of is sure to tide you over. From the creators of Offspring and the Stan Original Series Romper Stomper, the brand-new 10 episode show is a spin-off from the critically acclaimed Stan comedy-drama Bump. Set at the Sydney harbour-front school Jubilee High, featured in the original series, the multi-generational story follows a diverse social circle of city slicking teens — and their protective parents — as they navigate the senior years of high school.

As they slowly, yet curiously, venture into adulthood, the group go on a journey of self-discovery — ranging from personal identity to sexuality and the pertinent theme of belonging. But they soon realise that every action and emotion comes with consequences — yet it’s the mistakes which truly make them. “Bold, quirky, raw and brave, Year Of fearlessly delves into the dark underbelly of the supposed best years of your life,” Stan writes.

Prime Video

Deadloch, New Series — June 2

It’s the feminist noir crime thriller created by two Melburnian comediennes. The two Kates, Kate McLennan and Kate McCartney, have traded stand-up gigs for Prime Video projects, with their new crudely cool new series Deadloch. Spending Melbourne’s harsh lockdown penning the show in their local park, Deadloch is inspired by their shared love of Scandinavian noir crime series’. BAZAAR chatted with the pair about the series filmed over six months around Tasmania, which they described as “an orchestral piece of writing.”

“From the cerebral wordy humour to fart jokes or someone falling over, we cover a few bases. There is the use of swearing as well — it is blue and crude and we got to do something interesting and different by fusing this all together. The formula is very Australian,” McCartney said.

Set in a fictitious sleepy seaside town, two female detectives Kate Box and Madeleine Sami (the latter, Ladyhawke’s life partner) try to solve a murder — after a male body is found washed up on the beach. But rather than being a classic whodunnit featuring hysterical weeping women, Deadloch is full of clumsy blokes, those too tapped into their emotions and paints a picture on small town stereotypes.

“We wanted to do the genre justice and make sure it was a thrilling whodunit,” McLennan said.

BINGE

The Idol, New Series — June 5

Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye’s visuals and music videos have always been somewhat of a cinematic experience, especially during his conceptual After Hours era. Now, he’s taking his onscreen storytelling to the next level, with the help of some of his A-list peers. Tesfaye has developed, co-written, and stars in The Idol, a new and scandalous (more on that here) series for HBO. Made in partnership with Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, the drama chronicles female pop singer Jocelyn (played by Lily-Rose Depp) who starts a romance with an enigmatic L.A. club owner and self-help guru (Tesfaye) — who is also the leader of a secret cult. Naturally.

The six-episode season, dubbed a darker more provocative Euphoria, focusses on the entertainment biz — following Jocelyn’s comeback after undergoing a nervous breakdown. Now before you think Britney Spears (although, there are plenty of parallels) — Depp recently revealed she gained inspiration from Sharon Stone’s character in Basic Instinct. The Idol, which went through an almost complete re-shoot, was also largely filmed at Tesfaye’s own home. So even if the sadistic celeb plot isn’t your thing, at least you can somewhat check out The Weeknd’s digs?

Aside from The Idol — must we recommend BINGE’S other excellent June streaming option, And Just Like That… season two. More information here.

Tom Holland like you’ve never seen him before. The psych-thriller is set in Manhattan and sees Danny Sullivan (Holland) being investigated for his involvement in a shooting by an unlikely and curious investigator Rya Goodwin (played by Amanda Seyfried).

The Crowded Room, inspired by the 1981 non-fiction novel The Minds of Billy Milligan by Daniel Keyes, is told through a series of interviews between Rya and Danny. The gripping 10-episode series recounts Danny’s life story, revealing elements of the mysterious past that shaped him, and the twists and turns that’ll lead him to a life-altering revelation — which assume him as the true culprit. Four of the most salacious non-British royal scandals

The global press may be captivated by the British royals, but it’s not to say other royal families are without controversy.
By Hayley Peppin

BETWEEN King Charles’ and Camilla’s affair, Prince Andrew (in general), Megxit and of course all of the details from Prince Harry’s memoir, Spare; UK royal scandals have dominated the headlines for decades.

But with 26 reigning royal families around the globe — from Thailand to Morocco — it isn’t just the British monarchy with royally juicy secrets and scandalous behaviour.

Here are four other royal scandals from around the world.

Thailand’s King imprisoned his own mistress

While affairs seem to be more common than not in royal circles, it wasn’t so much Thailand’s, King Vajiralongkorn’s affair that had tongues wagging. But rather some other choices he made in regard to his long-term mistress, Sineenat Wongvajirapakdi that created controversy (and headlines).

In 2019, Wongvajirapakdi went from being promoted to ‘royal consort’ (the first appointed to this role in over a century), to imprisonment for “misbehaviour and disloyalty against the monarch” in the span of three short months. Despite being given the honorary consort title to keep her happy following his fourth marriage (to Queen Suthida), Wongvajirapakdi’s ‘promotion’ didn’t quite hit the mark as she allegedly tried to “elevate herself to the same state as the queen.”

In response, the royal consort was punished with 10 months imprisonment in a Bangkok jail for her ‘misbehaviour.’ At the time, the Palace officially stated Wongvajirapakdi was “ambitious,” and “disrespectful” with her “resistance against the king and the queen.”

“The king gave her a royal consort position, in hopes of relieving the pressure and a problem that could affect the monarchy,” the statement said, before noting: “she neither was grateful to the title bestowed upon her, nor did she behave appropriately according to her status.”

Although she was expected to rejoin the King, with all of her prior titles and privileges reinstated after her sentence, sexually explicit selfies were stolen and leaked sabotaging her return.
But it seems time really does forgive all wounds, because it is rumoured (although not confirmed) that in 2021, on her 36th birthday, she was crowned as the second Queen of Thailand.

King Albert II of Belgium fathered a secret child from an affair (and finally admitted it after five decades)

While the 18-year-long extramarital affair between the King and his mistress, Baroness Sybille de Selys Longchamps was an open secret amongst the royal family (and unsurprisingly a source of contention with his wife, Queen Paola), it wasn’t until 2020, after DNA tests were ordered, that the King (reluctantly) admitted he had also fathered a child from the affair, a daughter who was born 51 years prior.

Princess Delphine of Belgium. | PATRICK VAN KATWIJK / GETTY IMAGES

It is reported that while trying for seven years to prevent the DNA tests from being performed, the King also phoned his ‘illegitimate’ daughter, Delphine, shouting, “You are not my daughter!”

Except of course she was, and is now, known as Princess Delphine of Belgium.

A corrupt King.

King Juan Carlos of Spain spent close to 40 years on the throne before he abdicated his power and handed it to his son, Felipe.

Dubbed ‘The Playboy King,’ he was said to be a notorious philanderer, and his reputation declined over the years.

But it wasn’t this element of his lifestyle that saw him come unstuck. Instead, it was a Supreme Court investigation into corruption and his excessive spending during an economic crisis in his homeland that drove anger amongst Spaniards and caused the monarch to flee to the United Arab Emirates in order to avoid answering questions for the investigation. He has since returned to Spain for personal visits over the past year while investigations are still underway and is now referred to as ey emérito (king emeritus).

The runaway bride

The son of literal Hollywood royalty, Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier, Prince Albert of Monaco was once considered quite a ‘catch’. But when Prince Albert did pop the question and was headed to the altar, it took a lot of ‘catching’ to finally exchange vows with his fiancé, as his wife-to-be attempted to escape the nuptials not once but three times.

In the weeks leading up to the 2011 wedding, rumours swirled that the Prince had fathered a third love child to a mystery woman. Despite being understanding of the first two love children the Prince had fathered, it was three strikes for Charlene.

It was reported by the French newspaper, Le Journal du Dimanche that Charlene sought “refuge in the South African Embassy, while in France for a bridal-gown fitting.” But obviously, the two sorted things out because Charlene returned to Monaco, albeit only to attempt escape number two soon thereafter. This time the now Princess reportedly attempted to flee while attending the Monaco Grand Prix, that was until her passport was confiscated by palace staff.

Her third and final attempt occurred only days before the wedding. Charlene is said to have regained possession of her passport and booked flights to her homeland of South Africa before someone, or something convinced her to stay. Le Journal du Dimanche reported: “Several sources have confirmed that an arrangement was reached between the future bride and groom.”

Images of Charlene on her wedding day show the bride often tearful and appearing, absolutely miserable. Despite this, the couple remained married and have two children together.

Fully booked: The best new releases in June 2023

The newest releases to pre-order, tear through and pass along — or add to that teetering To Be Read pile.
By Alexandra English

IT’S a real mixed bag this month. Isabel Allende is back (again) with an historical epic; Jen Beagin and Rebecca F. Kuang have fun with stories about stolen, hidden and mistaken identities; and there’s a retelling of the true story of a doctor fell in love with his patient and lived with her corpse.

1

Big Swiss, by Jen Beagin

Dymocks, $32.99

Jen Beagin’s Big Swiss is lauded as the funniest book of 2023. Greta is transcribing the audio of an anonymous woman who lives in Switzerland and who she has nicknamed Big Swiss. Greta imagines this disembodied voice belongs to someone tall, wearing all-white, with blue eyes and a gap between her front teeth. Greta and Big Swiss are about to unknowingly bump into each other in the local dog park, where they will strike up a relationship (albeit a not-entirely-honest one) that will change both of their lives.

2

The Wind Knows My Name, by Isabel Allende

QBD, $24.99 (RRP $34.99)

With 28 books in 41 years, Isabel Allende has always been considered prolific, but the past few years have seen her ramp up her output even further. Last year’s Violeta was an epic 100-year journey through one woman’s life, bookended by pandemics. This year, The Wind Knows My Name also intertwines the past and the present, but this time between two characters. Six-year-old Samuel Adler is living in Vienna in 1938 when his father disappears during Kristallnacht, the Nazi pogrom against the Jewish population. In an attempt to secure her son’s safe escape, Samuel’s mother puts him on the last children’s train out of the country to England. In Arizona in 2019, seven-year-old Anita Diaz is separated from her mother while they flee El Salvador on a train to the States and finds herself at a camp in Mexico. Eight decades apart, two children taken from their families in the face of unimaginable tragedy, Allende’s new novel is a testament to love, survival and sacrifice.

3

Exquisite Corpse, by Marija Peričić

Booktopia, $34.99

Marija Peričić’s second novel, Exquisite Corpse, is a horror romance inspired by a true story. Carl Tanzler (aka Count von Coel), a German radiographer in the 1920s, was obsessed with one of his hospital’s terminally ill patients, Elena de Hoyos. After she died, he stole her corpse from her tomb and brought her home, buying her clothes and perfume and dancing with her body. For seven years, he attempted to preserve her body as it deteriorated. Apparently, at the time, public reaction to the story was that it was an ill-fated love affair, and Tanzler was a romantic hero who would stop at nothing to protect the woman he loved. Peričić’s retelling takes a more realistic approach to explore how romanticising grand gestures can mask the darker side of love, including coercive control and obsession.

4

Sad Girl Novel, by Pip Finkemeyer

QBD, $27.99 (RRP $34.99)

Confronting the age-old dichotomy between motherhood and career, Sad Girl Novel is the story of two best friends, Bel and Kim, who are living in Berlin and about to embark on two very different paths. When Bel has a baby, she realises motherhood is more fulfilling than her career. Meanwhile, Kim is an aspiring writer determined to write a bestseller. Babies are not on her radar. As the women set out on these two acts of creation, Bel and Kim find themselves trying to support each other while also feeling entirely alone.

5

Yellowface, by Rebecca F. Kuang

Dymocks, $32.99

Yellowface is the literary equivalent of doing a shot. Rebecca F. Kuang wrote it to be devoured quickly, ideally in one sitting. “[It is] is a zippy, ridiculous thriller meant to imitate the roiling schadenfreude of watching a Twitter meltdown,” she has said. “You’re supposed to feel sick to your stomach and sick of everyone involved, and unsure of what to believe except that you still can’t look away.” The literary darling Athena Liu is choking to death in front of her friend, the literary nobody June Hayward. Afterwards, June takes a peek at the manuscript Athena has been working on and decides that it’s brilliant, if not in need of a bit of an edit. She decides to finish it and send it to the publisher as her own work. There’s the minor problem that the story is about Chinese labourers in World War I, and June is white and has no knowledge of Chinese history. Easily solved: she changes her name to the more ethically ambiguous “Song”, and off she goes. But how far will she go to keep her stolen success?

6

Limelight, by Daisy Buchanan

Booktopia, $32.99

From the author of the deservedly hyped novels Careering and Insatiable, Daisy Buchanan, comes Limelight, another unconventional love story. Sisters Frankie and Bean couldn’t be more different. Frankie feels invisible living in the shadow of her seemingly perfect sister and seeks out reassurance by posting risqué photos to her online fans. The online Frankie, the new Frankie, is sexy, confident and entirely unrecognisable from the offline Frankie. When Bean is diagnosed with cancer, their mother launches an online fundraising campaign and, in the process, discovers Frankie’s profile. Her family stops speaking with her, and feminists and misogynists start ranging at her online. All the while, she’s gaining new fans and trying to work out the difference between who everyone tells you to be and who you need to become.

Style codes for Euro Summer, as exemplified by your favourite celebrities

Euro Summer is creeping up on us and if you need some sartorial inspiration, look no further than the A-list style set.
By Ella Sangster

IT’S ALMOST THAT time of year again — where Instagram is saturated with friends sipping Aperols atop Mediterranean cliffs, endless texts about a Greek bar you simply must visit some day, and half the office appears to be empty because no one wants to stick around for puffer jacket season. That’s right, European Summer is right around the corner.

This year, if you’ve given in to the wanderlust and heading abroad for la dolce vita — your biggest question likely isn’t about visas or flights or hotel stays (though if it is, check out our comprehensive Euro Summer guide here). Rather, it’s: “What am I going to wear?”

As much as European summer trips are about living your best life and exploring the magnificent continent, let’s be real — it’s also about the clothing. Social media users have been sharing their holiday hauls en masse, providing guides on what to buy, and how to style a Euro-specific capsule wardrobe. But with the sheer mass of content, it can be difficult to actually find fashion inspiration that is both practical and chic.

Lucky for us, this year the celebrity set landed in Europe early offering endless inspiration. Just this month, a myriad of stars touched down in France for the Cannes Film Festival, showing off their enviable European street style while wandering around between events. Even celebs who weren’t invited to cinema’s glitziest event are also abroad — such as Hailey Bieber who declared she’s “about to have the best summer of my life.”

In addition to your core wardrobe — tank tops, shorts, bikinis and t-shirts — it’s always worth having a few flashier pieces on hand to upgrade an ensemble. Ahead, we break down the top trends celebs are wearing and the non-capsule garments you should pack to ensure your Euro Summer style is top-tier.

1

A simple shirt

A simple button-up is the perfect layering piece. It stands alone as a top for a day (or night) out, or can be thrown over a swimsuit as a beach-side cover-up. In Cannes, Ella Fanning opted for a striped number by The Row, but any linen, cotton or breathable style will ensure you look elevated and effortless.

GETTY IMAGES

2

Sun and slip dresses

Is anything more summery than a sun dress? In Cannes, Laura Harrier proved that even the most simple style can look chic, pairing a polka dot slip with sandals, sunglasses and a thin jumper.

3

A nautical top

If you’re planning to spend time on the sea, there’s no more fitting garment than a nautical top or t-shirt. But instead of a classic Breton style (which could be interpreted as a French cliché), opt for a knitted number or a style with thicker stripes or detailing.

GETTY IMAGES

4

Chic sneakers

Yes, sandals are the shoe of summer. But if you’re planning on doing some sightseeing — which involves plenty of walking — comfortable, enclosed footwear is a must. In Cannes, Irina Shayk proved even the sportiest of trainers can be elevated, pairing hers with a stylish red tweed dress and coat.

GETTY IMAGES

5

Sophisticated day-to-night dinner dress

Unless you’re on a shoestring budget, you might as well make the most of the fine dining Europe has to offer. As Kylie Jenner recently proved in Paris, a good dinner dress — hers is Alaïa — is a must-have in your travel wardrobe. A simple, muted option that can be worn multiple ways and layered under shirts or sweatshirts is both practical and space-saving.

GETTY IMAGES

6

A cardigan

Yes, it may be summer, but parts of Europe can still get cold — especially at night if you’re by the sea! Protect yourself from the potential chill with a chic, cozy cardigan. Take notes from Iris Law, who paired a pink cardi with a miniskirt and headscarf in France, or rug up with lightweight trousers or jeans.

INSTAGRAM / @ROSIEHW

7

Simple sets

A co-ord is desirably practical because it literally takes away the procrastination of choosing an outfit. For an activity-packed day, being able to wake up and just throw on a set means you have a few more minutes to rest and reset before a busy day. Coordinated pieces — such as this cream set donned by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley — can also be mixed and matched, offering extra outfits without taking up precious space in your luggage.

INSTAGRAM / @DIDISTONE

8

A vibrant print

Be it a dress, jumper or tee: At least one fun printed garment will add a pop of colour to a capsule wardrobe that is, most likely, of a muted palette. A bright striped dress like this one Didi Stone wore in Portofino is sure to be a go-to for events or late-night dinners. Alternatively, a printed shawl or scarf takes up little room while making for an eye-popping accessory.

GETTY IMAGES

9

Jeans, of any style

As mentioned, Europe can get cold! We aren’t saying you need options for wash or cut, but ensure you have at least one pair of jeans on-hand for those nights when the mercury drops (and it will). In Cannes, Sydney Sweeney proved that a simple look can actually look very effective!

10

A chic (or sheer) cover-up

If you plan on spending time by the beach, it’s worth investing in a stylish cover-up; be it a sheer number a la Kendall Jenner, a crochet dress or simply a cool, oversized T-shirt. Simply a throw-on piece to get you from the sand to your stay in style is a Euro must (bonus points if it shows off that cute bikini you bought especially for the trip. No shame).

WHEN it comes to looks that toe the line between elevated-casual and elegant, you need not look further than Kendall Jenner for inspiration.

The model has become renowned for her pared-back — often The Row-heavy — street style looks, which epitomise the trending ‘quiet luxury’ aesthetic. But, when she’s not donning denim, classic slacks and elevated basics, Jenner has proved she knows how to provoke and impress with her style. And her go-to style choice? Something sheer.

Sheer clothing has been omnipresent as of late, taking over the runways and street-style galleries alike. But as is to be discovered ahead, Jenner has been donning and rocking the controversial style for years. From gowns to singlets to near-naked dresses, the reality star has long had an affinity for see-through ensembles. Ahead, we round up the very best of them.

Weighted blankets not only will keep you warm, they also provide a soothing heaviness.
By Dani Maher

FORGET COUNTING sheep: Weighted blankets are a far better way to get a better night’s rest.

It’s likely you’ve heard of them now — whether online, in your social feeds, or through a friend who bought one and won’t stop raving about the way it’s literally changed their life.

If you haven’t yet bought into the trend, there are a few compelling reasons why you should consider it — they aren’t all fluff. Read on for the full breakdown of the science behind their benefits, the best options to buy, and the answers to all your weighted-blanket-related questions.

What are weighted blankets?

Weighted blankets are heavier-than-usual blankets, designed to aid with calmness and deeper sleep. They’re usually filled with glass beads to add that desired heaviness, and covered with a plush, minky material for softness and warmth.

What are the benefits of a weighted blanket?

The benefits of weighted blankets mainly come from the way they provide both proprioceptive input and deep touch pressure stimulation (DTPS).

To explain that in a way that makes a little more sense — proprioception essentially describes the way our mind constantly sends ‘questions’ to our body to keep it informed about our position in space. Weighted blankets answer those questions (providing proprioceptive input) which allows our brains to relax and feel more at ease.

DTPS is what specifically provides that proprioceptive input. Deep pressure has been defined as “the sensation produced when an individual is hugged, squeezed, stroked or held” with a pressure that is gentle yet firm. This sensation can increase parasympathetic activity in the body, slowing high energy functions like heart rate; while also decreasing “fight or flight” sympathetic activity in the body, reducing levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Some studies have also shown that DTPS can increase endorphin levels, releasing “happy hormones” serotonin and dopamine.

So essentially, weighted blankets can calm and soothe you — while also encouraging a more sound sleep in deeper REM states, which means you’ll wake up feeling more rested.

Which weight of weighted blanket do I need?

According to the Sleep Foundation, the general rule of thumb is that weighted blankets should be about 10 per cent of your body weight. Preferred weights though, can vary between five and 12 per cent of your own weight — you want something that provides your desired level of comfortable, while making sure you still feel safe beneath it and can move around easily enough.

Is a weighted blanket worth it?

Considering that they provide the dual purpose of keeping you very toasty and offering soothing comfort, I absolutely think weighted blankets are worth it. I have one, and have been using it religiously in the cold weather — dragging it from my couch to my bed each night and enjoying its comforting heaviness.

Who should not use a weighted blanket?

Most manufacturers recommend that weighted blankets shouldn’t be used for pregnant women, or children under the age of 10 — and with children generally, you need to be very careful about the weight of the blanket you choose. Opt for a child-sized blanket and only use the weight specified according to your child’s own age, height and weight — Calming Blankets suggests a 2.2kg blanket for children under 25kg, and a 4.5kg blanket for those who are heavier and taller.

ADAIRS

Is it OK to sleep with a weighted blanket every night?

Weighted blankets are safe to use while sleeping, though not for everyone. Young children and pregnant women shouldn’t sleep with weighted blankets, and those with sleep apnea, asthma or claustrophobia should consult their doctors first.

Can you wash weighted blankets?

It depends on the exact blanket you buy — you should always go by the manufacturer’s specific instructions to prolong the blanket’s life.

That said, most weighted blankets feature a removable outer cover that can be safely washed on a delicate cycle, and dried laying flat. The inner part of the blanket shouldn’t be washed, as the weight is not only possibly bad for your washing machine — it could also lessen the lifespan of the blanket.

Explaining the series finale of Succession

The new Waystar Royco CEO is…
By Quinci Legardye and Hayley Peppin

HBO

THE ROYS’ REIGN of Waystar-Royco is officially over, along with one of the best shows of the past decade.

Succession came to an end with tonight’s 90-minute finale, as the HBO drama finally crowned one of the Roys kids head of the empire before tearing it all cruelly away. The episode begins with Kendall, Shiv, and Roman at very different places on the day before the GoJo vote: Shiv is sitting confident in the Mattson suite tallying their favourable votes, Kendall is scrambling to pull off his upset, and Roman is missing. Eventually Caroline calls her daughter to let her know that Roman has traveled to Barbados to recuperate after the funeral. That sends Shiv (and later Kendall, thanks to a tip from Greg) straight to the beachfront home to bring Rome onto her side, to solidify the GoJo deal.

However, Shiv’s slot as Mattson’s American CEO isn’t as stable as she thinks. There’s a dark harbinger on the Mattson suite’s coffee table: a political cartoon of the tech mogul as a puppet, with Shiv pulling the strings. Mattson pretends to shake the ego blow off, but it’s clear from the first scene that he’s begun to distance himself from Shiv mentally. He later admits as much to Tom during a night out, saying that he’s over Shiv’s strong ideas (and that he wants to hook up with her, which tracks with Mattson’s treatment of Ebba and likely every other woman in his professional circle). Instead, he wants a figurehead, someone to take the PR brunt as the public face while the tech mogul works his magic behind the scenes. And who would be better than Tom, the man who Shiv herself admits will “suck the biggest dick in the room.”

succession series finale explained
HBO

Meanwhile, in the Caribbean, Kendall hears (again from Greg, with the help of translation-app eavesdropping) that Mattson’s meeting with possible CEOs, including Lawrence Yee from Vaulter. (Love an early-season callback.) He tells the news to Roman and Shiv, and Shiv is shattered by the news. Now her allegiance is up in the air, as the siblings fight yet again over the possibility of one of them taking the throne. They know that they won’t sway the board with a shared-power pitch, and Kendall makes a convincing argument for why he should be the CEO. (Roman choked at the funeral, showing weakness because he was *checks notes* grieving his father, and Shiv is still inexperienced in a leadership role.) Shiv and Roman do float the humorous play of killing Kendall, but eventually they agree to go with him. The rare show of sibling solidarity transitions into a hazing ritual, with the trio devolving into child-like joy in a kitchen sequence that ends with Kendall’s coronation via a disgusting kitchen-scrap smoothie.

When they arrive back in New York on vote day, they take a detour to Logan’s old penthouse to figure out who gets what before Connor and Willa move in. In the couple’s last sequence, we learn that while Connor’s off to Slovenia, Willa will stay in NYC to stage her latest play. That update is followed by a sweet moment where the Roy children watch an old home video, giving Brian Cox a chance to make his necessary final appearance as Logan. The haunting moment gives another show of sibling unity, and the whole penthouse visit seems pretty benign until Tom and Shiv reunite. It’s then that the bomb drops: Mattson’s proposal to make Tom CEO was serious, and Tom himself breaks the news to Shiv. As Shiv storms out of the apartment with her brothers in tow, both Mattson and the Roys prepare for a showdown.

When it’s time to cast votes, the big players fall on their expected sides, and both Kendall and Roman make their votes to kill the GoJo vote and install Kendall as CEO. The last vote, with a six-six tie, comes down to Shiv…and she can’t do it. She recuses herself, and the board meeting pauses as Kendall and Roman follow her to a non-soundproofed office to berate her into following the plan. But Shiv says over and over that she can’t see Kendall as CEO, and four seasons of old wounds are resurfaced as a desperate Kendall tries to reel his sister back over to his side. The biggest impact comes when Shiv brings up the death of the cater-waiter at her wedding; Kendall’s so far gone that he says it never actually happened, in a show of desperation that makes Roman take back his support. When Kendall devolves to the “eldest boy claim” and brings up the need to keep the company in the family line, Roman points out that Kendall’s children aren’t his by blood. Kendall finally snaps and attacks Roman, and as they fight, Shiv casts the deciding vote for GoJo. In the aftermath of that shocking scene, Roman makes an admission that’s the final death knell of the trio’s claims: “We are bullshit…We’re nothing.”

The only impossible way that Kendall, Roman, and Shiv would keep Waystar Royco in the family was to build a united front, and that was never going to happen. Every moment of genuine sibling unity throughout the show has been fleeting, and it’s devastating but not surprising that the group’s bond crumbled at the final, most necessary moment. Shiv’s about-face was sudden in the moment, but she had already spent half the season being pushed out of decision-making by Kendall. Her fury at Tom’s latest betrayal didn’t propel her all the way through the vote; it weakened enough for the echo of doubt in Kendall’s trustworthiness to push through. Then, when Kendall tried to walk back the strongest moment of solidarity the trio had throughout the whole season, both Shiv and Roman were faced with the fact that Kendall would do anything and push over anyone he needed to grab the ring.

HBO

As a broken Kendall walks out of Waystar Royco, Tom waltzes in as the new CEO. He offers Greg a place as his side, even though the two came to blows earlier after Tom found out Greg was feeding Kendall information. Roman gets it together long enough to sign the company over to Mattson, though he doesn’t even want to be in the room with the guy, and later sits alone in a bar, sipping a martini with a contemplative face. Shiv leaves the building with Tom, taking his hand when he coldly offers it up in the backseat of a private car.

Does Kendall die at the end of Succession?

The final scene shows Kendall, shell-shocked, walking through a waterfront park with bodyguard Colin (Scott Nicholson) close behind. Ken walks up to a park bench, and stares out at the water as the sun starts to set. It’s an image of uncertainty, focusing on the man who has spent his entire life dedicated to the empire that he has just lost. Both he and the audience are left in the feeling of “what exactly just happened?” as Nicholas Brittel’s score plays and end credits roll on the series finale.

With this ending, Kendall’s fate after the loss of his “birthright” is left to the imaginations of the viewers. He has lost everything in the fight to keep the company; he may use his humongous payout to start a new company but, as creator Jesse Armstrong points out in the show’s last Inside the Episode featurette, there’s a very small chance that Kendall will accomplish anything to the scale of his father’s empire. The question now is whether Kendall will find something new to live for, or if his final water scene portends the character’s eventual off-screen death. For now, Kendall’s alive, and he’s left to figure out a way forward.

Could there be a Succession spin-off?

If we’re going by Nicholas Braun’s since-deleted Instagram Post, it’s quite possible. The actor, who star as fan-favourite character cousin Greg, shared a picture of him with co-star Matthew Macfadyen (who plays Tom) on May 29 where he alluded to a future “Disgusting Brothers” spin-off. With the pair beaming at the camera with Macfadyen’s thumbs up, Braun wrote: “Your new CEO and CE something else that’ll be nailed down soon.”

Now, whether Braun — pulling a very Greg move — deleted the post because he revealed possible new series information too soon or if it was taken out of context, only time will tell. But previous comments by the creators suggest the door remains open for new Succession developments.

INSTAGRAM | @nicholasbraun

HBO head of drama Francesca Orsi told Deadline just the day before the finale episode that “there was some talk” about spin-offs.

“I’ll never say never but my instinct, and based on a number of conversations about the evolution of Succession and these characters, at this stage, there is no intention of spinning any one character off,” she said.

“Jesse [Armstrong, creator], should he do a series again, I think it will be entirely original. Whether it’s based on IP or not, I’m not sure, but it will be a new show, a new idea entirely.”

Let’s hope that new idea includes Greg and Tom up to all sorts of money-hungry mischief.

Why Taylor Swift’s collaboration with Ice Spice is so controversial

Swift’s reported boyfriend, The 1975 frontman Matty Healy, recently laughed at racist comments made about the New York rapper.

Content warning: This article contains references to racism and racist language.

ICE SPICE IS ARGUABLY one of the hottest young artists on the music scene right now. Therefore, her collaboration with pop icon Taylor Swift should be welcomed by fans, right? Well, not exactly.

When Swift announced on Wednesday that the latest deluxe release of her Midnights album, Midnights (The Til Dawn Edition) would feature the New York rapper on a new version of ‘Karma,’ her fans were less than pleased. The collaboration only served to further irritate Swifties who already took issue with her relationship with The 1975 frontman, Matty Healy.

Healy has previously been called out for a string of controversial behaviour. Healy has reportedly made several “ironic” anti-Semitic references — including allegedly doing a Nazi salute at one show earlier this year — and Islamaphobic comments. He also previously said that dating Swift would be “emasculating” — though, he later clarified his comments in a series of Tweets, stating that he meant being referred to only as “somebody’s boyfriend,” would be emasculating, and that his wording was not specific to Swift.

What did Matty Healy say about Ice Spice?

One of Healy’s most recent controversies came about when he laughed at a racist joke directed at Ice Spice during an appearance on The Adam Friedland Show.

In the podcast episode — which has since been removed from Spotify, but recordings of the episode have been shared on Twitter — Friedland referred to Ice Spice as “one of the Inuit Spice Girls” and a “chubby Chinese lady.”

When Healy mentioned he had messaged the ‘Munch’ rapper, he was asked, “So you slide into her DMs and ask ‘What are you? A fucking Eskimo or something?’”

He laughed and replied by saying, “Yeah, that’s what I was like, you f—king…”

GETTY IMAGES

In the same episode, the singer encouraged the host to do an “impression” of a Japanese person working in a concentration camp during the Holocaust. In the recordings, he can be heard laughing as Friedland mocks a Japanese accent.

Reportedly, Healy briefly addressed his comments during a concert in New Zealand, saying, “I don’t want Ice Spice to think I’m a dick… I love you, Ice Spice. I’m so sorry.”

His attempt to quell the controversy fell flat with fans of Swift and Ice Spice, as well as the general public. Various videos calling out the collaboration have garnered tens of thousands of likes on TikTok, and HuffPost published a now-viral article under the headline, Taylor Swift Is Apparently Dating An Alleged Racist — And Is Now Using A Black Woman To Cover Her Ass.

At the time of writing, Swift has not addressed Healy’s comments about Ice Spice and the pair are still reportedly in a relationship.

How did the Ice Spice remix of Taylor Swift’s “Karma” come about?

In a Tweet posted on May 26, the day of the song’s release and amid controversy, Spotify shared an audio clip in which Swift discusses how the collaboration came about.

“Collaborating with Ice Spice on ‘Karma’ was one of the most natural things,” Swift said. “She reached out through her team, just kind of saying, ‘Hey, Ice has been a big fan of Taylor since she was a little kid, would love to collaborate if that was ever something that came about.’”

Swift revealed that the love was mutual, saying, “I had been listening to her nonstop, like getting ready for my tour, I was just listening to Ice Spice constantly.”

“So I immediately got her number and said, ‘Hey, would you wanna do your version of ‘Karma’? Do you relate to this?’ And so she jumped in headfirst.”

“Getting to know her has been so special because I’m blown away by her,” the songstress added. “In my opinion, she is the one to watch.”

What is the open letter fans wrote to Taylor Swift?

Some Swifties have been vocally irritated by the relationship since The Sun first broke the news Swift and Healy were together in early May. On May 18, a group of fans even penned an open letter to Swift demanding she address Healy’s problematic behaviour.

“As concerned fans, we are writing to express our disappointment,” the letter, which was posted to Twitter, read.

“You have recently been seen with and welcomed to your stage Matty Healy, the frontman of The 1975. He has been involved in acts and controversies that deeply trouble us.”

“Your voice holds tremendous power, and right now, your silence is palpable. This silence sends a message of indifference, particularly to the fans who have supported you.”

SERENA WILLIAMS is stylishly showing off her growing baby bump while holidaying in Italy.

The tennis legend and entrepreneur posted two pictures to Instagram of her wearing a sophisticated figure-hugging black gown with Barbiecore sandals. The first, sees Williams look straight to camera — showing no signs of pregnancy — with the second, revealing her side profile of her bump and derrière.

“CAUTION: Things are not always how they appear,” the 41-year-old captioned the Post, of her also standing in what looks to be a floral lined wedding aisle.

“I am Seriously trying to figure out if the baby is in the front or….back,” she concluded.

Famous friends flooded the comments section, with Khloe Kardashian commenting: “Hahahahaha dying lol;” meanwhile Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian wrote: “This kid somehow kicks more than Olympia. It’s everywhere 🤪.”

The tennis star first revealed the happy news at the 2023 Met Gala. Prior to walking the red carpet, she posted to Instagram a series of images of her in an elegant Gucci look — a black-and-white dress — which beautifully showed off her growing baby bump.

“Was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala,” she wrote in the caption, speaking of herself, husband Alexis Ohanian, and their unborn child.

Williams wore a black dress with sheer, billowing long sleeves and a breezy white chiffon skirt which flowed into a long train. The piece was embellished with pink-toned crystals at the neck and skirt, and featured white cuffs with pink crystal buttons. She accessorized the dramatic piece with layers of white pearl necklaces, a pearl headband by Lelet NY, and diamond stud earrings from Tiffany & Co., as well as her diamond engagement ring and wedding band. For beauty, she wore dark eye liner and a berry lip, and had her hair slicked back into a neat bob.

Williams’s big pregnancy reveal comes after she announced last year that she would be retiring from playing professional tennis in order to focus on and grow her family.

In an emotional essay, she wrote: “I have never liked the word retirement. It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition, but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people. Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution.”

She added, “I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me. A few years ago I quietly started Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm. Soon after that, I started a family. I want to grow that family.”

She and Ohanian welcomed their first child, daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., in 2017.

Taylor Swift and Matty Healy’s full relationship timeline

HEARTS BROKE ACROSS the world when news spread of Taylor Swift’s split from longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn. But only weeks later, the singer is proving love is not dead, thanks to a speculated new man — one who has actually been there all along.

The Midnights singer’s relationship with 1975 frontman Matty Healy dates back to 2014, when the two met backstage at one of Healy’s concerts and subsequently spurred rumours of sharing a secret fling. Whether their dynamic was more romantic or platonic, the two artists remained connected through the years, collaborating on music and openly supporting each other’s work. Their music-based kinship culminated most recently in Swift’s surprise performance at Healy’s January 2023 show in London, as well as in Healy’s visit to Nashville this past month to see Swift in concert during a leg of her Eras Tour.

Now, it seems more concretely that the pair have rekindled an old spark—and, unlike with her ultra-private relationship with Alwyn, Swift appears to be owning this romance more openly.

Ahead, see everything we know so far about Swift and Healy’s romantic history — from their first dating rumours in 2014 to their most recent PDA-filled outing in New York City.

May 28, 2023: Matt Healy teases fans about Taylor Swift relationship

Matt Healy addressed the elephant in the room — or should we say, festival — when he told nonchalantly hinted at his rumoured romance with Taylor Swift. During The 1975’s performance at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend music festival, the British front-man asked the crowd in Dundee, Scotland: “Is it all a bit? Is it sincere? Will he ever address it?”

He then sarcastically responded to his rhetorical question with: “All of these questions and more will be ignored in the next hour. Ladies and gentlemen, this is The 1975.”

May 20, 2023: Taylor Swift shares life update

During her Eras tour in Foxborough, Massachusetts; Taylor Swift told fans she’s “never been this happy” as she continues to reportedly date Matt Healy.

“I kind of feel like telling you, I don’t know, I’ve just never been this happy in my life, in all aspects of my life ever before.”

She continued to tell concert-goers: “And I just want to thank you for being a part of that. It’s not just the tour. I just sort of feel like my life finally feels like it makes sense.”

Swift concluded her positive life update by saying: “And I just want to thank you for being a part of that. It’s not just the tour. I just sort of feel like my life finally feels like it makes sense,” before performing the evening’s surprise song ‘Question…?’

While Healy recently attended Swift’s concert with her father (yes, how sweet) he’s not believed to have supported her latest performance.

May 15, 2023: They’re spotted exiting a building together in New York City.

Swift and Healy are seen leaving Electric Lady Studios in New York City together after a recording session. For the outing, Swift pairs a purple and gray NYU crewneck sweater with Free People’s black “Heartbreaker” skort, and tops off the look with beige sneakers and a brown leather crossbody bag. Meanwhile, Healy wears a black long-sleeve shirt, black trousers, and brown boots.

BACKGRID

An insider tells People, “Taylor is happy. She’s very focused on her tour but is enjoying hanging out with Matty when she is off.”

Another source added, “They’re hanging out and having a good time. It’s not just platonic.”

May 12, 2023: Their romance is caught on camera.

Swift and Healy are captured on an official outing together at Casa Cipriani in New York City (where Swift looks lovely in a breezy yellow sundress from DÔEN). Per an onlooker to Page Six, the pair get cozy at a banquette in the lounge and are seen “cuddling and kissing.” They are also reportedly joined that evening by their mutual friend, Jack Antonoff.

The sighting comes after The Sun reports on May 3 that Swift is in a new relationship with Healy. “She and Matty are madly in love,” a source tells the outlet. “It’s super-early days, but it feels right.”

Days later, on May 8, both Entertainment Tonight and Us Weekly also report that the two artists are “having a good time” hanging out and reconnecting.

May 5, 2023: Matty visits Taylor during her Eras Tour.

Healy — who had just wrapped up a concert in the Philippines —flies 17 hours to Nashville to attend one of Swift’s shows on her Eras Tour.

Eagle-eyed fans note that in their respective performances—Healy’s on May 3 and Swift’s on May 5 — the two mouth the same words onstage: “This one is about you. You know who you are. I love you.”

Then, on May 6, Swift and Healy are captured heading back around midnight to Swift’s condo in Nashville, marking the first time the two have been photographed since the breakout of recent dating rumours.

January 12, 2023: Taylor makes a cameo at a 1975 show.

Swift makes a surprise appearance onstage during Healy’s 1975 show in London while she’s in town to see now-ex-boyfriend Alwyn. (The cameo is monumental in more ways than one, as the “Midnight Rain” singer also makes her live debut of her hit “Anti-Hero” during the performance.)

The appearance directly confirms recent rumors that Swift and Healy have been collaborating in private. (Healy had initially denied the rumors in September, but eventually came forward on Audacy’s DTS Sound Space, telling hosts Kevin Klein and Ally Johnson that he worked with Swift on several songs for her Midnights album that didn’t make the cut. We actually worked a bit on that, but then the version of it never came out,” Healy said. He added that there were no hard feelings and that he respects Swift’s artistic decision: “It was for reasons that are not to be criticised. She’s amazing.”)

September 23, 2019: Matty gushes over Taylor.

Healy expresses an interest in collaborating on an acoustic album with Swift (who, by this point, is in a relationship with Alwyn) while praising the singer and her talents. “I would never slag Taylor off, I think Taylor’s amazing,” he tells host Neil Griffiths on the Green Room podcast. “Taylor, if you ever want someone to help you set up the mics for your acoustic record, just so you know, I’m there.”

February 25, 2015: They party at the BRIT Awards.

After Swift attends Healy’s concerts in November and December, she is seen reconnecting with him at an after-party for the BRIT Awards. They are photographed alongside Nick Grimshaw and Ellie Goulding at Universal Music’s bash at the Soho House pop-up in London.

On this night, Swift is believed to have also met Calvin Harris, whom she soon went on to date into 2016. Goulding—who had then recently collaborated with the DJ on his October 2014 single “Outside” (from his fourth studio album, Motion)—reportedly introduced the two at the event.

November 26, 2014: Matty denies dating rumours.

During a talk on Shazam Top 20, Healy hilariously denies that he and Swift are dating. “I mean, bloody hell, what am I going to do, go out with Taylor Swift? She’s a sensation,” he says. “I wouldn’t say no.”

He continues, “We met each other. We exchanged numbers in the same way a lot of people in this kind of world do. And we spoke occasionally, and then she’s the biggest pop star in the world. I’m in Australia. There’s no, like, relationship or anything happening. It’s just funny how people really, really buy into that.”

“So that didn’t really happen,” Healy adds. “As much as it’d be amazing for me if it did, unfortunately it didn’t.”

November 20, 2014: They meet backstage.

Swift attends one of Healy’s 1975 concerts in Los Angeles with fellow musicians Ellie Goulding and Selena Gomez. She meets him backstage and exchanges numbers with him, Healy later reveals.

Days later, on November 22, Swift is captured out wearing a 1975 shirt, spurring rumours of a potential romance. And the following month, Swift attends another of Healy’s concerts, this time with model friend Karlie Kloss, in New York City.

Sarah Snook announces birth of first baby during Succession finale

The Australian actor surprised fans when she shared a sweet Instagram post of her and her new baby watching the ‘Succession’ finale.

SUCCESSION may be over (yes, we’re streaming distraught) but Sarah Snook has shared her “life has changed again.” The Australian actor, best known for playing the smart and savvy Shiv Roy in the HBO drama, has subtly revealed she welcomed her first baby during an emotional Instagram tribute.

“It’s hard to express what this show has meant to me. The places I got to go, the immense talent I got to work with… it breaks my heart that it is all over,” the 35-year-old began the Post shared on May 29.

After describing “all the memories, good times, challenges” of working on the critically-acclaimed comedy-drama — which she also called a “career highlight” — Snook shared an optimistic life-update.

“I just watched the final episode of the final season of something that has changed my life. And now, my life has changed again. Thank you for all the love and support.”

The picture she posted saw Snook and her new baby sitting in front of the television, about to watch the Succession finale.

It’s unclear yet whether her and husband, Australian actor and comedian, Dave Lawson welcomed a boy or girl.

DIMITRIOS KAMBOURIS / WIREIMAGE

The actress revealed the news of her pregnancy at the show’s Season 4 premiere in New York on March 20, later confirming to Entertainment Tonight that she was expecting her first child.

“It’s exciting! I feel great,” she told the publication on the black carpet, revealing that she is currently 32 weeks along. The Adelaide-born actor added that she was actually pregnant while filming the show’s final 10-episode season. However, she reassured viewers, “I mean, you couldn’t super tell.”

Later, she joked that her role in Succession has shown her “what not to do” as a parent. “I don’t know if the Roy family are a paragon of family values…” she laughed. “I don’t think we could be looking up to them for guidance.”

One note that Snook clearly did take from her character, however, is her penchant for glam, with the star adding a touch of sparkle to her dress for the occasion. The 35-year-old looked resplendent, taking to the carpet with her bump on full display in a figure-hugging black jumpsuit. She paired the number with a shimmering silver coverall.

This will be Snook’s first child with Lawson, whom she wed in February 2021. The couple kept their marriage a secret for months, with Snook waiting until in November of that year to reveal the news.
